Now how come I couldn't find this dress in
the store?

Marshall Field's is pretty much your standard
department store; It has a little bit of everything
and the prices range from cheap to expensive. Their
stores aren't quite as filled with brand names,
though, so as a result you might find cheaper stuff
here.

I wasn't impressed with Lord & Taylor
as I walked in, because all I saw were gross Tommy
Hifiger and Ralph Lauren brand clothes. I was about
to walk out when I saw a light from heaven shine
into the store onto a wall that had a sign saying,
"CASHMERE." I walked over there, and the whole wall
was filled with cashmere clothing. Mmmmm. Too bad I
couldn't afford it. Anyway, an average department
store with a great cashmere section.

You'll only find these stores in Massachusetts,
New York, and Illinois, but if you happen to be in
any of these three areas, check them out. Filene's
is a department store with outlet prices. Their
clothes aren't organized very well, and everything
isn't overtly trendy, but you can find some buried
treasures. Be sure to check out their "Collections"
section, which has a bit of everything on sale.
It's where I found my leather pants for $100, which
cost $480 at Bloomingdale's and over $500 at North
Beach Leather. Filene's also has crazy annual
bridal sales (shown right), which hundreds of women
line up for hours before they open because you can
get $7000 gowns for $249.

Props to Urban for having unique clothes that
stretch the boundaries of fashion. You wouldn't be
able to find many of the clothes Urban sells in
other stores. It's is one of my favorite stores and
I go there a lot, though I haven't actually bought
anything from them yet. Their clothes include a lot
of imports, especially asian ones. Because Urban's
especially trendy, again you're paying for the
design, and I haven't hit the point where I'm
willing to pay for that with them yet. Many of
their clothes are over $100 for simple things that
wouldn't be hard to make yourself. But, I enjoy
Urban's hippie and Asian styles and I like seeing
what they'll sell next.

Anthropologie is a store I recently discovered,
and seems to be an Urban clone in terms of fashion
and store atmosphere, but only sells women's
clothes. Like Urban, everything they sell is too
expensive, for instance, the dress shown in this
picture (right) costs $84.95. Generally when I
shop, I'll be like, "I like this, but I'll only buy
it if it's under..." And I'll estimate a reasonable
price for the item. In Anthropologie's case, the
actual price is always at least $50 higher. Still,
I like their clothes.
